In our latest AI Opportunity Q&A, a listener named James, an Operations Director at a financial advisory firm, asked a question that many business leaders are quietly wrestling with:

It’s a valid concern. Even as AI tools promise faster reporting, sharper insights, and fewer manual tasks, the question of data safety remains the biggest barrier to adoption, especially in regulated industries like finance, healthcare, and law.
And this week, a Guardian investigation made that question even more urgent. According to the article, experts have found major flaws in hundreds of tests meant to check whether AI systems are safe and effective. In other words, even the benchmarks we rely on to measure AI’s safety might not be reliable.

These findings highlight a critical truth: AI isn’t dangerous by default, but it’s only as safe as the environment it runs in.
Most public AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude, process data through shared infrastructure and may temporarily store user inputs for quality control or retraining. That’s fine for casual use, but not for sensitive or regulated data.
For any business handling client information, the line between innovation and exposure can be razor-thin. The Guardian’s report underscores that even the AI safety ecosystem is still maturing, so due diligence is more essential than ever.
How to Keep AI Safe — Without Losing the Benefits
From our experience helping companies deploy AI securely, here’s a practical way to think about it:
- Treat AI like a new hire.
You wouldn’t give a new employee access to all systems on day one. Start small, grant access incrementally, and build trust through clear governance. - Use private or enterprise-grade AI environments.
Tools like Brim or enterprise contracts with major AI providers ensure your data stays within your cloud or virtual private network, with clear policies that it won’t be used for public training. - Ask your vendor the right questions.
Every provider should have a written data policy. Ask where your data is stored, how long it’s retained, and who has access. Transparency is the foundation of security. - Keep humans in the loop.
Even the most advanced models make errors. Treat AI as an assistant, not an authority, especially in decision-making around finance, compliance, or HR.
The Real Opportunity
AI doesn’t have to be risky to be powerful. When deployed correctly with private hosting, clear permissions, and structured access, it can become one of the most secure ways to manage information, not a threat to it.
As the Guardian’s reporting shows, we’re still early in learning how to test and trust AI systems. But for businesses, the safest path forward isn’t avoidance, it’s controlled adoption.
